EUROPEAN METEOROLOGICAL EDUCATION AND TRAINING

Deliverables

Summary: An important aspect of the NEWBALTIC project is to systematically make use of novel satellite data information for an independent assessment of water vapour, cloud water and radiation fluxes. Profiles of the integrated water vapour have been derived from GPS data for Aug. to Oct. 95 and evaluated. Recently 25 sites in Sweden and Finland have been used. There is good agreement with data from microwave radiometer and radiosonde data. The root mean square differences are of the order of 1 - 2 kg/m2. This study shows that water vapour profiles retrieved from the GPS data make a very important contribution to the project as well as being important for future operational meteorological observing systems.

Exploitable results

European Meteorological Education and Training (EUROMET) created a multimedia, network-based service to support the varied education and training requirements of the meteorological community in Europe. A meteorologists 'European Knowledge Network' will be set up, allowing the provision of a meteorological training course delivered over the Internet. The project developed a generic authoring environment, for professional meteorologists, national meteorological centres and tertiary students college and university.
