Sea-air exchange - Processes and Modelling
The European Commission, DG XII, has recently published the report of a workshop on Sea-air exchange: Processes and modelling. The workshop, which was sponsored by the Community's specific RTD programme in the field of Marine Science and Technology (MAST), was held in Norway in June 1997. The aim was to examine the latest developments in the understanding of sea-air exchange processes and modelling. The report contains the proceedings and recommendations of the workshop, including summaries and background documents from the working group discussions, both full texts and abstracts of papers presented during the workshop, details of the programme and a complete list of participants and their contact details. The overall conclusions of the workshop highlighted a number of important facts including: - Sea-air exchange processes are important in delivering eutrophying nutrients to the sea; - Sea-air exchange processes are also important in delivering bioactive and bioaccumulative trace metals and persistent organic pollutants; - Trace gases are fundamentally linked to climatic change, ozone layer depletion and acid deposition; - Sea-air exchange processes may be even more important in the semi-enclosed seas of Europe.
