The European Commission has recently published a book of synopses of projects funded under the EU's Marine Science and Technology (MAST) programme. These projects form part of the European Land Ocean Interaction Studies (ELOISE), a joint initiative of the Environment and Climate and MAST research programmes, together with the International Cooperation programme (INCO). During the first phase of ELOISE a total of 15 successful projects were selected following the call for proposals launched in 1995, and started in 1996. Seven of these projects are supported under the MAST programme, including the Nitrogen Cycling in Estuaries (NICE) project, Physical forcing and biogeochemical fluxes in shallow coastal ecosystems (PHASE) project, and the Entangled sulfur and carbon cycles in Phaeocystis dominated ecosystems (ESCAPE) project. The publication provides information on each project, as follows: - Contract details including duration, EC funding and contact details for the EC scientific officer responsible; - The objectives of each project; - The main work being undertaken; - Technical approach and achievements; - Contact details for the coordinator of each project. The book will be updated in 1998 and will provide descriptions of several additional projects, selected following the second call for proposals (deadline January 1997).
