In order to examine existing legal obstacles to the free flow of personal data in national data protection law, the European Commission, DG XV, has published an invitation to tender. The study should only deal with obstacles which may impede the free provision of cross-border services in the financial and insurance sectors. The study will therefore cover all categories of companies or institutions engaged in the provision or sale of any type of financial or insurance service, such as banks and insurance companies and related companies, or institutions such as credit card companies and institutions that assess creditworthiness and risk premiums for insurance. In addition, the study should indicate the measures that may be needed to remove these legal obstacles.
