The European Commission has published a list of accredited environmental verifiers for the purposes of the Community eco-management and audit scheme (EMAS) and a list of sites accredited to the scheme. These lists, published in the Official Journal, contain contact information on registered sites and accredited environmental verifiers whose registration has been notified to the Commission up to and including 31 May 1998. EMAS is a voluntary environmental management scheme, aimed at promoting continuous improvements in the environmental performance of industrial activities by committing sites to evaluate and improve their performance and to provide relevant information to the public. Industrial sites which wish to be registered in the scheme must have their environmental policy, programme, management system, review or audit procedure and environmental statements examined to verify that they meet the requirements of the EMAS Regulation and they must have their environmental statements validated. This must be carried out by an independent, appropriately accredited, environmental verifier.
