The European Commission, DG III, has published a prior information notice of a forthcoming invitation to tender for a study on the impact of EU competition law on innovation. The aim of the research would be to analyse the influence of specific EU competition law on the performance of European industry in terms of innovation, providing also a comparative analysis of the situation in the US. It is expected that the conclusions of the study would contribute to the debate regarding reform of the legislation. They would also input into the global assessment of the effects of existing policy and the formulation of new policy ideas. The content of the project may be divided into three different fields: anti-trust, state aids and merger issues. A number of topics for each of the fields where the research is expected to provide an input will be identified. An invitation to tender concerning this study is likely to be published at the end of August 1998.
