The European cities of tomorrow - proceedings of the REBUILD conference
The proceedings of the second REBUILD conference, held in Florence, Italy, from 1 to 3 April 1998, have recently been published. The event was supported within the framework of the EU's programme for the promotion of energy technology (THERMIE) and aimed to promote the development of the citizen's urban environment in an environmentally sound manner. The conference brought together urban policy makers and planners, representatives of local authorities, municipal utilities, as well as other social and economic actors who play a role in the building sector and are involved in the environmentally conscious production and use of energy. The main topics addressed included urban planning for sustainable development, sustainable mobility in the urban context and the protection of cultural heritage with low energy technologies in building restoration and construction. The publication provides an overview of the proceedings of the conference, giving an insight into the state of the urban environment and the use of energy saving technologies from a global, innovative and resource saving point of view. It also provides a review of successful projects which have already been implemented.
