Linguistics research and engineering (LRE): Second call
The Commission of the European Communities publishes a second call for proposals for the specific programme of research and technological development in the field of telematic systems in areas of general interest, 1990-1994, concerning Area 6: Linguistic research and engineering (LRE). The aim of the research and technology development projects carried out within the framework of the LRE area is to develop a basic linguistic technology for Natural Language Processing (NLP) which can be incorporated into a large number of computer applications where natural language is an essential ingredient, with a view to overcoming limitations and inefficiencies brought about by the use of different languages within the Community. Work may be supported in the following sub-areas: I: Research aimed at the improvement of the scientific basis of linguistic technologies (computational semantics, and evaluation and quality assessment methods and procedures for natural language systems and products); II: Creation of common methods, tools and linguistic resources (multilingual corpora of machine-tractable texts plus related methods and guidelines, and feasibility and project definition study for the creation of catalogues and repositories of linguistic resources); III: Pilot and demonstration projects (machine translation, advanced office automation tools, electronic publishing and authoring systems, automated methods and tools for hypertext databases, structured text databases and intelligent categorization/storage aids, tools facilitating the reuse of existing terminology collections, computer-aided training and tools for interactive applications). The area of interest must be identified on all correspondence. However, the above domains are not limitative. Proposers are invited to suggest and motivate additional RTD themes and topics relevant to the linguistic research and engineering area.
