Digital communications - export opportunities for European companies
The results of a survey carried out for the European Commission on export opportunities in European digital communications have recently been published. The survey gives a detailed overview of the worldwide introduction and deployment of European digital mobile technologies and services, and assesses further opportunities and constraints for their export, focusing in particular on the next generation of digital mobile systems. The report aims to identify, in the light of the results of the survey, a series of actions which may be taken by the European Commission to support European digital mobile communications industries throughout the world. The technologies assessed cover the cordless and wireless loop, cellular telephony and paging. The actions suggested in the report aim to reproduce and adapt key elements which created the successful dynamics of the GSM in the early 1990s. The overall conclusion of the report in this respect is the continuation of support for technology and standardisation research, through the Community RTD programmes such as the RACE programme for communication technologies and the ACTS programme for Advanced Communication Technologies and Services.
