CORDIS Express: NASA and ESA tools and data boosting research results

NASA and ESA tools and data are helping many EU-funded projects to deliver groundbreaking results for space science. This week’s CORDIS Express takes a look at some of the projects and findings.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) hit the headlines this week with news that there may be liquid water flowing on Mars. If it proves to be true, it could be a ‘game changer’ as where there is water, there is probably life. Intensive research efforts over many years got us to this point, and EU-funded researchers are also playing their part in efforts to advance our knowledge of space. EU-funded projects regularly work with NASA and European Space Agency (ESA) tools and data to push the boundaries of space science. The IMPEX project, for example, compared data taken from ESA’s Venus Express mission and NASA’s Messenger mission with existing simulation models with the aim of ultimately gaining a clearer understanding of how our solar system came into existence. Meanwhile, the ETAEARTH project team uses the continuous datastream from the NASA’s Kepler mission and cutting-edge ground-based instrumentation to learn more about small planets in our galaxy. Project findings are expected to bring us closer to understanding whether of not the Earth is a unique habitat for the complex biology called life. This week’s edition of CORDIS Express takes a look at these and other EU-funded projects that are using NASA and ESA data and tools to provide fascinating results. We also explore the implications of potentially finding water on Mars in this week’s Trending Science. - A common language to boost future space expeditions(opens in new window) - Hypoxia + bed rest = Planet habitat(opens in new window) - Preparing for solar storms(opens in new window) - How common are small planets?(opens in new window) - Trending science: NASA reveals ‘strongest evidence yet’ of liquid flowing on Mars(opens in new window)
