The Multilingual Information Society (MLIS) Programme will shortly publish a call for proposals for the development and demonstration of multilingual networked services and resources. The pre-announcement of the call is available on the MLIS Programme's website. The call for proposals relates to Action Lines 1 and 2 of the MLIS programme and project proposals are invited in the following areas: - Provision of multilingual language resources over global networks; - Development of multilingual networked services. To support Europe's linguistic diversity in the information age, there is a need to ensure a balance between major languages and the languages used by smaller national or regional communities. Consortia are therefore encouraged to include regional and less-used languages in their proposals. More detailed descriptions of the areas are available from the MLIS website at: URL: http://www.linglink.lu/hlt/mlis/mlis-call.asp The calls will be published in the Official Journal at the end of May or the beginning of June 1999. A central information day aimed at presenting the various issues and practicalities of the call to potential proposers is foreseen for June.
