The European Commission, Directorate-General XI, is now inviting comments on recent changes to the European Union's guidance documents on environmental impact assessment (EIA). The Commission is in the process of revising its three existing EIA guidance documents on Screening, Scoping and the Review Checklist. These were completed between 1994 and 1996 and have been widely disseminated over the last five years. Regulators, developers and others have therefore been able to use them on real life projects. The full version of these documents has recently been loaded onto the EA homepage at: URL: http://europa.eu.int/comm/dg11/eia/home.htm Information on the scope of the study is detailed in references in the EIA guidelines, available in pdf format from the Web address below. The Commission believes there is a need to monitor the use and effectiveness of these guidelines and to update and refine the guidance so that it remains appropriate to the needs of the users and reflects changes in legislation and practice. The Commission is therefore inviting comments from those with an interest in this area on the existing documents, including their usefulness, content or any other aspect. The Commission is also appealing for notification and details of any other EIA guidance documents on these topics used elsewhere in the world.
