Commission supports health and safety at work
The European Commission has recently published a call for proposals for subsidies in the area of health and safety at work. The Commission is prioritising support to more effective health and safety legislation over the period 1998 to 2000. Such support, it says, might include: - Promoting the greater involvement of labour inspectorates in encouraging the effective enforcement of Community law; - Preparing for the evaluation of existing legislation; - Improving small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) awareness of health and safety at work issues and encouraging the transfer of good practices; - Developing clear instructions contributing to the effective implementation of the legislation. The Commission is planning to fund studies in the following areas: - Agricultural inspectorates' European safety campaign; - European session for textile industry inspectorates; - Evaluation of measures to prevent occupational cancers; - Evaluation of measures to prevent chronic occupational encephalopathies; - Organisation of events to raise awareness among SMEs; - To prepare practical guidelines for: - - Occupational exposure tables; - - Training people whose work involves removing asbestos; - - Preventing falls from heights; - - Evaluating electromagnetic fields. The Commission has announced that a provisional sum of 2.5 million euro will be made available to support this call.
