The European Environment Agency has begun an initiative to harmonise the work that goes into 'State of Environment' (SoE) reports in its member countries, as well as countries participating in the EU's Phare programme. This is meant to facilitate consistent reporting on the environment throughout Europe and to contribute to better comparability of national SoE reports. The EEA is therefore looking for support for this harmonisation process, requiring work to be carried out in the following fields: - The development of existing overviews of questions answered by SoE reports in a concise manual; - Papers and studies on topics of special interest to an expert group, selected by the EEA to help identify common SoE requirements throughout Europe; - Updating the overview of issues covered by the European SoE reports, published on the EEA homepage; - To organise two meetings for the expert group on guidelines and reporting in 2000, to discuss the results of the studies and to report on these meetings.
