At the same time as the European Commission opens its calls for proposals for the Descartes Prize, honouring excellence in scientific research, it is also inviting proposals for the Archimedes Prize for distinctions in high-level research work. This award is offered under the European Union's Improving Human Research Potential programme, part of the Fifth RTD Framework Programme. The Archimedes Prize is open to undergraduate students of European higher education institutions who have developed original scientific ideas or concepts in areas which are relevant to the advancement of European science. For this call, students' scientific and technological achievements must be relevant to the following three themes/challenges: - Artificial intelligence: automata and other applications; - Concepts and tools for long-distance collaboration and teaching; - Technological development and the management of risk implication for governance. Candidates must be nationals of a Member State or associated state, or have lived in the EU for the past five years. They must be registered in a higher education institution in the EU or an associated state, and be attending a course leading to a first degree. In the case of a team all members must satisfy these conditions. The Archimedes Prize will be funded as an accompanying measure to the Fifth Framework Programme. From a budget of 450,000 euros the EU will award monetary prizes and/or equivalent recognition. The prize winners will win, on average, 50,000 euros each, from which they will be able to draw funds, to enhance and develop their future scientific careers.
