The action plan for safer use of the Internet is a multiannual community programme covering the period 1999 to 2002. As part of this action, the European Commission is now inviting proposals to promote awareness of safe use of the Internet.

The objectives are to promote awareness actions directed at users, in particular children, parents and teachers, to allow them to use Internet resources provided by industry safely and with confidence. 'They will stimulate use of Internet services in the home and schools by reducing the cause for concern that may be felt by parents and teachers about the availability of illegal and harmful content;' says the Commission. These awareness actions should also contribute to the take up and success of the application for filtering and rating systems for Internet content.

The actions will be carried out in two stages. The first will involve identifying the best means of achieving these objectives and the launch of pilot projects. In the second stage, multiplier organisations in the Member States - such as consumer bodies and other relevant organisations - will help to implement actions nationally. The present call for proposals is for the first stage and follows a call for proposals already launched on 1 April 1999.

The Commission estimates it has around 4 million euro to spend on actions in this area.
