The Joint Research Centre's Ispra site requires one or more interim stores for the temporary storage of about 15,000 cubic metres of radioactive wastes (low, intermediate and high level) and nuclear materials prior to their eventual transfer off site. It is envisaged that, apart from the main storage hall(s), any store will be provided with regulated personnel and material access, rooms for conventional services, sanitary services and changing rooms, a control room and a health physics room. Services will, in general, include a heating and ventilation system, electrical distribution system, fire detection and protection system, radiation monitoring system, liquid waste collection and detection system, mechanical handling equipment for drums and containers, surveillance equipment and security equipment.
