Star logo to signify energy efficiency
An energy star logo is set to appear on European office and communication technology equipment deemed to have met certain standards of energy efficiency, if plans put forward by the Commission are approved. The European Parliament and Council are currently considering proposals submitted by the European Commission to establish a Community voluntary energy-labelling programme. Participants in proposed the scheme, entitled the Energy Star programme, would be able to use a star logo on products intended for the Community market. The programme is intended to maximise energy savings resulting in consumer and environmental benefits. The move follows an agreement between the EU and the USA to coordinate energy efficient labelling programmes in order to stimulate international trade of information and communication technology equipment. The scheme will mean that products which meet certain specifications will be granted use of the energy efficient star logo by the United States Environmental Protection Agency. The Commission would also establish a European Union Energy Star Board which will promote the use of the star logo, as well as contributing towards a review of the specifications. Member States would be expected to establish a control mechanism to ensure the energy star specifications and registration procedures are not abused.
