The Joint Research Centre's Institute for systems informatics and safety has seen major increases in its recent research efforts in the fields of dependability of information systems, web technologies, official statistics and technologies for combating fraud. And, according to its 1999 annual report, the Institute has also consolidated research in areas such as remote surveillance in nuclear safeguards, exchange of information to combat industrial and natural hazards, and communication technologies for environmental management. The Institute reports a more competitive approach during the year, resulting in the opening of projects for an emergency response centre for industrial risk management in Sweden; and the surveillance of fishing vessels in the North Atlantic. In addition, it negotiated some 32 new shared-cost action projects during the first year of the Commission's Fifth Framework programme. The 1999 report presents a number of the Institute's exploratory projects in the following fields: - security and reliability in the information society; - safety of building structures and means of transport and protection of cultural heritage; - safeguarding against the proliferation of nuclear weapons; - safety aspects of nuclear energy; - the fight against fraud; - risk management and decision support. A review of the Institute's finances is also given along with the contact details for the researchers whose work is described in the publication.
