Luxembourg set for take off
Luxembourg is to sign up as a full member of the European Space Agency˜s club researching new uses for telecommunications technology in space. The Grand Duchy has already gained experience of space technology both as a participant in the international Intelsat, Eutelsat and Eurocontrol research programmes, and through its own national research activities in the field. Now it is will become a member of the ARTES ( Advanced Research in Telecommunications Systems) programme. The ARTES programme is looking at a range of applications of telecommunications technologies including on-board processing, multimedia/global information infrastructure, advanced mobile systems, tele-education, tele-medicine, tele-conferencing, and data exchange. This work should help open up new services for advanced telecommunications and maintain the global competitiveness of European companies in the telecommunications industry. Luxembourg˜s Minister for Culture, Higher Education and Research, Mrs Erna Hennicot-Schoepges and the Director General of the ESA, Mr Antonio Rodota will sign the formal agreement at ceremony at the ESA headquarters in Paris on September 12.s over
