On 20 October, economic issues, including co-operation in the field of science and technology will be the topic of discussion at the third ASEM (Asia-Europe meeting) summit, taking place in Seoul, Korea. ASEM summits take place biennially between heads of state and government of the EU member states, ten Asian countries and the president of the European Commission. The theme of this year's meeting is 'partnership for prosperity and stability in the new Millennium'. Several Asian countries, including Korea and Singapore wish to place emphasis on co-operation in the field of information technologies. Belgium and Singapore have proposed to organise a seminar on electronic commerce early in 2001. Korea, in its position as chair, has also proposed the creation of a scientific network between Europe and Asia, 'an excellent idea' in the words of Chris Patten, external relations Commissioner, in Hong Kong on 18 October 2000. Additional new co-operative projects, including the promotion of e-commerce, the closing of the digital divide and programmes to promote student and academic exchanges will also be discussed. Chris Patten added that he would like to see more education exchanges, such as the 'Duo' joint project proposed by France and Korea. 'The information age is a huge opportunity for Europe and Asia to work together to reduce the impact of the physical distance between us. We should share our experiences of building eEurope and eAsia and strengthen our links in this field', said Mr Patten.
