EU and US call for more cooperation in nanotechnology
Representatives from the European Commission Research Directorate General and from the USA's National Science Foundation met at a nanotechnologies workshop in Toulouse during October as part of a joint initiative to further cooperation in this field. The event coincided with the French science fair 'SITEF 2000.' Nanotechnology experts believe their work will set the next paradigm of science. Essentially it draws knowledge from all the scientific disciplines - physics, chemistry and biology - to understand how particles 'smaller than a nanometer (nm) but bigger than a micrometer (µm)' work in nature and can be manipulated to drive new technologies. High level representatives from both sides of the Atlantic urged participants at the workshop to work together to fully exploit and further each others knowledge of the field. Further details and interviews from the event will be published in the next issue of CORDIS focus.
