EU funds to assist Danish innovation
Denmark received some welcome news on 16 November when the European Commission approved a 379 million euro training and employment package for the country. The money will be used to encourage entrepreneurship and innovativeness and develop skills and training, as well as to strengthen employment policies and promote equal opportunities in the labour market. The grant will be financed by the European Social Fund as part of the EU's structural funds programme, and falls under the objective 3 category. Regions classified as objective 3 receive financing from the structural funds in order to adapt and modernise policies and systems of education, training and employment. Funds will be used to provide the necessary human resources to set up and run a viable business, thus promoting an entrepreneurial culture in schools and third level institutes, and boosting the entrepreneurial skills of women and ethnic groups. Another priority will be the improvement of skills, qualifications and flexibility of workers, notably those in smaller companies. The Danish authorities will now present a 'programming complement' to the Commission, which will indicate in greater detail where the funds will be spent.
