MEPs vote on creation of Information Society
MEPs will vote on three draft directives designed to boost the creation of the Information Society in Europe on 28 February. The three proposals are part of a package of eight submitted by the European Commission, aimed at providing a new framework for regulating electronic communications networks and services, thereby simplifying the current legal framework of 28 different legislative texts. The Commission aims to increase competition, thus lowering prices for consumers whilst offering a wider choice and better service. The new legal framework will cover all satellite-based and terrestrial communications networks, including the public telephone network and networks using the Internet protocol as well as cable television, mobile and terrestrial broadcasting networks.
