Environment friendly innovators rewarded at the world sustainable energy day

The winners of the energy globe award 2001 received their prizes at the World sustainable energy day in Wels, Austria on 1 and 2 March. More than 1000 projects and initiatives from 75 countries word wide contributed to the Energy Globe award this year. Participating initiatives included large installations of renewable energy sources, sustainable initiatives in the transport sector, 'pioneer' companies or energy campaigns and strategies. Projects came from third world countries as well as from the USA and Australia. Prizes were awarded in the following six categories. The winners were: - In the companies category: SMUD - Sacramento municipal utility district, USA. For an installation of 15 MW photovoltaics, dubbed a 'world-wide leading programme of an urban energy utility to promote photovoltaics.' - In the transport category: SEEG Mureck, Austria. A renewable energy transport project using bio-fuel from cooking oil for public transport. - In the building and housing sector: ITDG- South Asia. For supplying electricity for 13,000 people living in rural villages in Sri Lanka using with micro hydro power in 75 villages. - In the private and public initiatives category: Marstal Fjernvarme A.m.b.a Denmark. For Aero 'the Danish solar energy island', which is about to achieve 100 per cent energy supply from renewable sources with the largest solar district heating plant in the world. - In the category 'learning for the future': Gesamtschule Blankenese, Germany/Tanzania. For 'Solar energy for Ibungila', a project by German pupils involving the planning, installation and financing of renewable energy installations in Tanzania. - A special award for future technologies was awarded to BMW Group Austria, for working towards making hydrogen 'the fuel of the future'. iones.
