Commission seeks to strengthen EU-US digital economy cooperation
The EU and the USA should strengthen their relationship in the digital economy, according to a Communication to the Council and European Parliament by the European Commission. The Communication, adopted by the Commission on 20 March 2001, assesses achievements under the 'New transatlantic agenda' of 1995 and offers ideas on how to develop the full potential of the transatlantic relationship by focusing on a few strategic themes. Working together on this initiative, External relations Commissioner Chris Patten and Trade Commissioner Pascal Lamy hope to streamline EU-US cooperation and make it more efficient and action-oriented at all levels. Also on the list of potential priorities are emerging security challenges, energy issues, consumer protection, globalisation and the multilateral trading system, the fight against organised crime, macroeconomic issues and the fight against poverty in developing issues.
