Are car manufacturers giving consumers enough information about CO2 emissions?
The Environment Directorate-General is calling for tenders for a study contract regarding the implementation of Directive 1999/94 in order to establish recommendations to enable the application of the principles of the provisions on promotional literature to other media and material. As part of the Community objective to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from passenger cars, Directive 1999/94/EC aims to ensure that from 18.1.2001 information on fuel economy and carbon dioxide emissions of new passenger cars offered for sale or lease in the Community is made available to consumers, in order to enable them to make informed choices. The Directive covers mainly printed material, but not other material/media. Therefore, Article 9 requires that the Commission shall take measures aiming at, inter alia, establishing literature referred to in the first paragraph of Article 6 to other media and material. Most relevant in this respect seems to be Internet marketing and radio/TV advertising. It is the objective of this study to collect and evaluate relevant information and to make proposals on the possible scope and the application of such recommendations.
