The coordinator of Western and Southern Sweden's Innovation Relay Centre (IRC), the Swedish Institute of Production Engineering Research (IVF) has succeeded in developing an advanced system using ozone for the purification, sterilisation and treatment of air and water pollution. The network of IRCs is supported under the European Commission's Innovation/SMEs programme and was created by the Enterprise DG in 1995. With people spending up to 90 per cent of their time indoors, exposure to indoor environmental pollutants has become substantial. Using ozone to sterilise and oxidise the air is preferable to using chemicals such as chlorine and hydrogen peroxide, which were previously used for such purposes. IVF, an SME from Mölndal, Sweden, has developed Sterizone, a self-contained ozone generating unit which employs an in-built compressor to provide a constant air flow to the ozone generator unit. Electrical discharges are used to convert oxygen molecules to ozone. The company is currently seeking collaboration for further research and development and licensing, marketing and manufacturing agreements. IVF participated in 48 projects in the Fourth Framework Programme and coordinated 12 of these.
