EU-Australian research links strengthen
Ways of ensuring Australian researchers' participation in the European Union's next Framework programme formed part of the agenda discussed at the sixth Australia-European Community joint science and technology cooperation committee (JTSCC) meeting in Canberra at the end of May. The meeting followed the first meeting of FEAST (the forum for European-Australian science and technology cooperation), which involved researchers and industry and government representatives to analyse further opportunities for cooperation. Participants at the latest JTSCC meeting in Canberra identified several events where cooperation between the two areas could be enhanced. These included IST 2001 in Dusseldorf (December), the intelligent transport workshop in Sydney (October) and the European-Australian clean coal workshop in Aachen (September). There was also discussion of how the respective centres of excellence of both Europe and Australia could cooperate and connection of an Australia -Europe high speed research network. Further discussions of the results of the first FEAST meeting will take place by the parties over the coming months.
