There has been a boom in applications for research projects, yet the success rates have been very low. In answer to this, the MOBILEX (MOBILEX - Mobility programme for experienced researchers) project aims to support international research. Roughly 78 mobility grants have been awarded to researchers who are at the start of their careers. They are based on an open, international competition and on the basis of free, interest-driven proposals across the range of all scientific fields that fall under the Danish Council for Independent Research (DFF). A careful selection process has been implemented that includes peer review, evaluation of scientific quality and qualifications. Before final selection, applicants are informed about the result of the evaluation and allowed to provide a rebuttal. The identity of peer reviewers is also revealed to ensure transparency. Outgoing and incoming grant holders are issued employment contracts at Danish universities. For successful implementation, several tasks need to be adhered to. These include planning and executing communication, responding to queries, keeping an overview of goals and adhering to guidelines. So far, receiving applications and granting awards has been a successful process. Information meetings in universities are helping to spread the word as is a call posted on educational websites. Openness to transnational mobility can be enhanced as a result. Research collaborations and the career paths of young people in Denmark and internationally are set for a brighter future.
