New website reveals results of research on sustainable mobility
The Commission's Energy and Transport DG has unveiled a new website (address below) giving information on the results of transport-related research carried out under the Fourth Framework programme (FP4), which took place from 1994 to 1998. Details are available on 280 projects carried out under the FP4 research and technical development programme (RTD), covering key social, financial and economic issues. The website provides summaries of the main results and policy implications which emerge from the research, as well as detailed project reports from an extensive document library. Links are provided to related sites for ongoing and finished projects. Users can also register to receive regular-mail bulletins so they can be kept informed of results. The eventual aim of the Transport and Energy DG is to build a transport 'RTD knowledge centre' as a reference resource for national and regional administrators, industry and researchers. The transport programme helps inform the EU's Common Transport Policy (CTP). The CTP aims to produce efficient, cost-effective transport networks for goods and passengers while minimising the social and environmental impacts of transport. The Fifth EU RTD Framework programme (FP5) from 1998 to 2002 has seen a shift in emphasis in transport research, with activity based around specific themes rather than modes. Such activities are covered by the key action 'Sustainable mobility and intermodality.' Other transport-related research being carried out under FP5 includes aeronautics, urban development and new vehicle and information technologies. The website project is entitled EXTRA (Exploitation of TRAnsport research).
