ESA upgrades Dutch space research centre
On 16 January the European space agency (ESA) will officially open three new buildings at its European space technology and research centre (ESTEC) in Noordwijk, the Netherlands. The expansion will provide extra satellite test facilities and additional accommodation for ESA scientists and engineers. The buildings will be opened by Dutch deputy Prime Minister and Minister of economic affairs Annemarie Jorritsma-Lebbink. One of the most important buildings will be an extension to the centre's satellite test facilities, allowing three large satellites to be tested at the same time. Essential tests need to be carried out to ensure that satellites can withstand the strain caused by the launch and temperature changes once they are in orbit. This process is vital as satellites cannot usually be repaired once they are in space. The other buildings to be opened will provide a new workshop with office space and a new wing for ESTEC's main building which will provide accommodation for the ESA scientists and engineers who work on ESA's space projects. ESA Director General Antonio Rodotà and ESTEC Director Gaele Winters will also attend the opening ceremony.
