Education council adopts objectives for bettering and harmonising the EU's education system
The EU's education ministers agreed on three strategic objectives for Europe's education systems in Brussels on 14 February: improving the quality and effectiveness of the EU's education and training systems, facilitating access to lifelong learning and training and opening up education and training systems to the wider world. Each of the Member States agreed to present the results of working towards these objectives, which should lead to the achievement of various goals by 2010. By 2010, the Education Council agreed that Europe should be considered a world reference for the quality and relevance of its education and training systems and of its institutions and Europe's education and training systems should be sufficiently compatible for European citizens to be able to move from one to another while making the most of their diversity. The ministers stated that individuals holding qualifications and knowledge acquired anywhere in the EU should be able to make effective use of them throughout the Union in their careers or for further education by 2010, Europeans of all ages will have access to ongoing education and Europe will be open to cooperation, to the mutual benefit of all other geographical regions, and should be the preferred destination of students, scholars and researchers from around the world.
