Commission appoints new JRC Deputy Director-General
German Commission official Roland Schenkel has been appointed as Deputy Director-General of the Joint Research Centre (JRC). Mr Schenkel will be specifically responsible for the relationship between the JRC and the stakeholders benefiting from its research results, both inside and outside the Commission, and will preside over the nuclear aspects of the JRC's work, including the implementation of the global decommissioning plan. Mr Schenkel will also play a major role in ensuring the JRC has the necessary resources for implementing scientific strategies. Mr Schenkel studied physics and radiochemistry at the Universities of Karlsruhe and Saarbrücken in Germany and joined the European Commission in 1979. He held the post of Director at the JRC's Karlsruhe institute from 2000 after joining the JRC in 1994. Prior to that, Mr Schenkel worked in the Energy DG.
