Novel models and tools to improve forest management

The environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and economically viable management of forests is a constantly evolving process that must adapt to various new circumstances. An EU initiative introduced innovative solutions to support forest management.

Forests supply a broad range of products and services, but they are highly complex and influenced by numerous external factors. Management approaches need to reflect specific ecological and environmental conditions and socioeconomic dimensions. Managing and planning forest resources for multiple use is a complicated practice that involves risk and uncertainty. With this in mind, the EU-funded FOREADAPT (Knowledge exchange between Europe and America on forest growth models and optimisation for adaptive forestry) project set out to develop models and tools in order to improve the implementation of adaptive strategies in forest management planning. FOREADAPT reinforced research collaboration through networking, staff exchange and dissemination activities between four research organisations from EU Member States and five from Brazil, Chile and the United States of America. The EU has science and technology cooperation agreements in force with the latter countries. In all, 40 researchers carried out over 70 secondments, enabling them to exchange scientific knowledge concerning forest modelling, mathematical optimisation and decision support systems. They advanced knowledge necessary to address risk and uncertainty in forest planning, particularly climate change. To this end, new optimisation models and decision support tools were developed. This resulted in 45 scientific articles, 22 book chapters and 12 articles that are either published, submitted or being finalised. In addition, several events were organised, including six conferences, one workshop, 14 research seminars and two courses. Researchers also held 65 talks at various conferences, seminars and workshops. FOREADAPT delivered optimised predictive tools and methods so that public administrators, forest owners, industry and non-governmental organisations can better manage forests in meeting diverse needs while considering a climate in flux.
