Chemistry chief welcomes UK Chancellor's education spending boost
The Chief Executive of the UK's Royal Society of Chemistry says increases in spending on school and university education announced in Chancellor Gordon Brown's spending review on 15 July will be good for science. Dr David Giachardi said the spending announcement - which will see British investment in schools and universities surpass US levels and the EU average - is an acknowledgement of the importance of science education for the country's future. He welcomed the move as 'an essential step to guarantee a proper infrastructure and environment for the teaching and learning of chemical sciences.' He added that 'the laboratory environment in the universities must be improved significantly to ensure that our young, emerging chemists can match those in the USA and other countries where science is high on the national agenda.' Dr Giachardi also welcomed the Chancellor's commitment to improving salaries for academics in specialist areas of science. 'Academic salaries at university level need to be much more attractive to pull in and retain high quality lecturers and researchers,' he said.
