Commission to fund further research into AIDS prevention
The European Commission has announced a 22 million euro programme aimed at the fight against HIV and AIDS in developing countries, which includes research into prevention. The programme is aimed primarily at young people, in the areas of prevention, care and treatment. The funds will also be used to improve education and health systems. A decrease in vulnerability to infection by HIV is to be pursued by a combination of research and training, for which the Commission funds will be used. In addition to these Commission funded activities, an additional programme will be run by private, public and non-profit organisations. A call for proposals for this programme will be launched in August. The initiative forms part of the EU's overall strategy to combat poverty related diseases such as HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis.
