The EU should increase its support for universities so as to facilitate the creation of a European higher education area according to a report by Spanish MEP Christina Gutiérrez Cortines. In her report, to be presented to Parliament on 5 September, Ms Gutiérrez Cortines argues that while universities should remain autonomous, EU support is important for the creation of a dynamic European higher education area which will further ongoing development. The draft resolution also calls for increased mobility and genuine recognition of qualifications and diplomas. Member States and universities are therefore urged to tackle the legal and administrative obstacles in the way of mobility. MEPs will call on the Commission to draw up a Green Paper on a future European higher education sector which should seek to examine the various regulations and working conditions for researchers, teachers, students and administrative staff and to identify the common programmes and public services that universities require as centres of education and research which would enable them to perform their tasks more easily.
