In 1993 the Cohesion Fund received a budget of ECU 1,565 million. The aim of this Fund is to support the effort of the four least favoured Member States in their convergance towards economic and monetary union. Of the 1993 budget, between 16-20% was allocated to Greece, particularly with a view to the amelioration of transport infrastructure and the protection of the environment. The first financial support has now been agreed in this area. It comprises nine environmental projects: - Protection of the water table; - Protection of soils and the restoration of forestation; - The implementation of water treatment plants; - A group of projects concerning water channelling; - A feasibility study for a centre of research and education on the environment; - Two projects on the protection of archaeological sites. The Community financial commitment involved in the implementation of these projects is in the region ECU 46.811 million.
