Cybercrime roadmap to increase internet safety
As the digital world expands, it brings with it significant growth in cybercrime, which compromises economic development. The EU-funded CYBERROAD(opens in new window) (Development of the cyber crime and cyber terrorism research roadmap) project worked on tackling cybercrime and cyberterrorism in novel ways. To achieve its aims, the project identified research gaps in strengthening the security of netizens and society. Beyond looking at available technologies, it investigated interconnected living in the near future – such as the internet of things – focusing on further integration of the digital world into daily life. The study involved experts and authorities in the fields of cybercrime, cyberterrorism, research, academia, industry, government and non-governmental organisations. It documented 18 urgent research topics for enhancing security and resilience, developing a viable roadmap for cyber security research. This included the elaboration of better and more effective high-tech solutions to detect and prevent attacks, considering as well legal and forensic aspects. All the roadmap's topics were presented in an interactive, web-based map, attracting interest not only from experts in the field but also the general public. This represents an important step in raising awareness about cyber challenges and what needs to be done to overcome them. The results were also presented through conferences, exhibitions, workshops and trade shows. Through a number of surveys, the research incorporated feedback from a key variety of stakeholders, from users and academics to law enforcement agencies and telecommunications companies. CYBERROAD's roadmap has already demonstrated its importance in combating online crime and terrorism, and in organising and informing the fight against illegal online activity in Europe. The safety of cyber citizens will undoubtedly be strengthened through these ambitious efforts.
