Commissioner for Enterprise and the Information Society, Mr Erkki Liikanen has welcomed the Committee of European Union Shipbuilders Associations (CESA) LeaderSHIP 2015 initiative, which aims to encourage innovation and entrepreneurship in the European shipbuilding sector. Speaking at the CESA's New Year reception on 29 January in Brussels, Mr Liikanen outlined the necessity of maintaining growth and development in light of the current challenges facing the shipping sector. Having chaired the first meeting of the LeaderSHIP Advisory Group, Mr Liikanen noted that 'particular stress was put on the establishment of fair market conditions, improved research and innovation.' Currently, practically all product innovations in shipbuilding, such as 3D computer assisted design systems or laser welding appliances, are of European origin, underlining that EU yards lead the trend towards more cost efficient, safer and cleaner vessels. The LeaderSHIP 2015 initiative is designed to develop new working structures and technology priorities and thus assure Europe's global leadership in shipbuilding. It brings together all major industry players, trade unions and key EU and national policy makers. Mr Liikanen stressed the value of such a bold initiative in helping to encourage competitiveness in all parts of the sector, from shipbuilders and repairers through equipment manufacturers, to design offices and research institutes. A reference document is expected in the near future, which will provide a basis for a broader discussion among EU Member States and partners in the maritime industries.
