A total of seven new projects plus one accompanying measure were accepted following the May 1993 call for proposals issued by DELTA, Area 4 (Flexible and Distance Learning) of the specific programme of RTD in the field of telematic systems in areas of general interest (OJ No C 121 of 1.5.1993). In addition, eight existing DELTA projects were extended. Details of the new projects are now available. They include: - Distributed Training with Interactive Multimedia Courseware (VALAM): The project builds courseware and distribution mechanisms for training, through interactive multimedia, in the banking sector; - Medical Multimedia Framework, Diabetes Mellitus (MMF-DM): To develop a system for interactive training and information programmes for doctors, nurses and patients, with a pilot experiment in the area of diabetes; - Negotiating European Competence Representation and Recognition (NECRAR): To address the issues identified by the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) study within the ERASMUS programme; - Integration of Discourse and OSCAR (INDIOS): Integration of the collaborative authoring and services to support courseware delivery with the authoring tooolset that supports the entire courseware life-cycle; - Nordic Information Broker Initiative (NORDIC): An accompanying measure aimed at facilitating information dissemination and experience exchange, between DELTA and the national and regional initiatives, in the Nordic countries; - Building Evaluation and Testing into Learning Technology Development and piloting Processes (DEVAL): To further the development, integration and validation work in DELTA through the extension of the current evaluation framework to encompass the new pilot experiments and the study of the impact of the evaluation strategies on learning technology; - Compact Disk Publishing for Interactive Language Learning (COMPILE): To demonstrate the effective use of database technology to support the creation, authoring and publication of series of related multimedia titles for a specific area; - Common Training Architecture II (CTA-II): To establish a service available to all DELTA projects on issues relating to the implementation of recommendations on standards and to coordinate the development of a distributed prototype of the Common Training Architecture. The overall aim of DELTA is to improve the performance of and access to learning services in Europe based on the optimum use of telematic systems in terms of flexibility, interactivity, remote access and user support, and to improve the market competitiveness of the training industry in terms of more effective services and learning materials, better economies of scale, and an evolutionary market strategy.
