A comprehensive 'step by step' overview of the Sixth Framework Programme (FP6) has been launched on CORDIS, the European Commission's Research and Development Information Service. The new sub-site offers a structured walk-through of what participation in FP6 entails - in six steps - from initial orientation in the framework programme to tips on how to manage a project that has been selected for funding. Thus, the 'step by step' guide is a valuable resource not only for those who are new to FP6, but also for those who have submitted a proposal or are about to embark upon an EU funded project. Beginning with an overview of how FP6 differs from previous framework programmes, the site offers advice on how to match traditional research disciplines with the thematic activity areas of FP6 in the section, 'finding your research theme'. Advice on proposal preparation is organised around themes such as, 'how to build consortia' and 'how to choose appropriate instruments', while the procedures for making and submitting a proposal are also explained, step by step. A structured account of 'what happens after submission' is then offered. This includes the evaluation of proposals and, for those projects selected for funding, the negotiation of contracts. The final part of the presentation is an overview of the life of an EU-funded research project, ranging from tips on good project management to problem-solving and the completion of contracts. The CORDIS 'step by step' guide to FP6 is clear and easy to read and is supported, at each stage of the presentation by a range of detailed information and reference documents.
