Eurescom, the collaborative research organisation of the major European telecoms network operators, and MATIMOP, the Israeli industry centre for R&D (research and development), have signed an agreement for closer cooperation on telecommunications research. The two organisations have agreed to cooperate in the creation and promotion of research projects that address issues of common concern. Envisaged activities will include the mutual exchange of information resulting from public and private research programmes, the launch of specific projects in Israel and Europe, as well as facilitating the participation of Israeli companies in European projects. 'Our goal is to achieve significant mutual project participation in our respective communities and exploit the potential of collaborating with the Israeli high-tech companies,' said David Kennedy, senior programme manager at Eurescom. Yair Amitay, general director of MATIMOP, added: 'The agreement will create important opportunities for collaboration. It will increase and strengthen the cooperation between Israeli and European companies.' The singing of the cooperation agreement follows successful collaboration between the two organisations in CELTIC, a Eureka cluster programme for collaborative, business oriented telecommunications research. The major European telecoms operators established CELTIC in 2003, and Israeli high-tech companies have played a significant role in its subsequent development.
