The European Commission has published a call for tenders relating to a study of worldwide trends and research and development (R&D) programmes in embedded systems, in view of maximising the impact of a technology platform in the area. The study will have the following objectives: 1) to make an analysis of the current state of the art in the area of embedded systems. This analysis should cover the following main aspects: a) technological current trends in the area, what are the most used and most promising technologies. These trends should be accompanied by qualitative data and facts in the different application sectors such as consumer electronics, automotive, avionics, telecommunications, and other relevant sectors. It should also address standards of the different technological fields involved in the area of embedded systems; b) assessment of the impact of embedded technologies on market developments of different industries and services (market penetration and share, percentage of cost/value of final product/service, etc.). This assessment should reflect the importance of the enabling effect of embedded technologies in the different application sectors such as consumer electronics, automotive, avionics, telecommunications, and other relevant sectors; c) assessment of the impact of embedded technologies on productivity and competitiveness factors. Recommendations should be made as to which leading indicators should be monitored. This analysis should give a detailed picture of the situation in the European Union and should be complemented with forecasts and projections of future tendencies and trends in a five year time-frame. The contractor should take into account all related publicly available documents and roadmaps (e.g. produced by ARTIST, ITEA, the Technology Platform on embedded systems, etc.). It should also provide a general comparative picture of the situation of the EU worldwide, mainly with respect to the US and relevant Asian countries. 2) To identify and study research and development programmes and initiatives (private and public) outside Europe (USA, Australia, Asian countries, etc) related to the development and adoption of embedded technologies. It should include figures of invested funds in both research and development and transfer of results and innovation-oriented activities. It should also provide a general comparative picture of the public research and development expenditure of the EU with respect to public expenditure in other relevant non-EU countries. 3) To analyse similar initiatives to Technology Platforms carried out by public/private undertakings in high-tech areas related to information and communication technologies. This analysis should mainly address the governance structure and modus operandi, identifying examples of best practise of operation, coordination activities and transfer of result. This analysis should provide good hints that could be of interest for the establishment and operation for the Technology Platform in embedded systems. The total allocated budget for the study is 150,000 euro. For further information, please contact: European Commission Att: Mr Leonardo Flores Anover BU29, 6/69 B-1049 Brussels Tel +32-2-299-1825 Fax +32-2-296-8389 E-mail: Leonardo.Flores@cec.eu.int To see the full details of the call, please consult the following web address: click here(opens in new window)
