The European Commission's Information Society DG has published a call for tenders relating to a study on the effectiveness of research and development (R&D) to increase the competitiveness of European industry in the sector of micro/nanoelectronics. As an input to the work of the nanoelectronics technology platform, the Commission wishes for a study to be undertaken on the nanoelectronics industry and research and development in Europe, with an emphasis on the effectiveness and efficiency of publicly funded research and development, its impact on industry, and the consequences for the research policy (the term 'publicly funded research and development' includes also research and development with joint public/industry financing.) The study should elaborate on the following aspects, with a focus on Europe but also in a global context: (a) the current status of the European nanoelectronics industry and its relevance for the European economy, including its interdependencies with other industries; (b) an overview and assessment of the recent and current European nanoelectronics research and development (industry, national, Eureka and EU funded), including the research and development of European companies outside Europe; (c) the effectiveness and efficiency of publicly-funded European nanoelectronics research and development, the limitations and deficiencies, and the impact for the industry. Comparison with US and Asia; (d) based on the above, recommendation and analysis of options for a European research and development strategy in nanoelectronics, in particular with regard to the optimal use of public funding. The recommended options for a European research and development strategy should take into account the strategies and cooperation of the European nanoelectronics industry, and elaborate among others on the following aspects of public research and development funding: - need and strategic goals; - focus; - organisation of the research and development and funding mechanisms, including cooperation at European and global scale; - other success factors. For further information, please contact: European Commission Directorate-General Information Society Attn: Bernard Netange / Michael Hohenbichler Office: BU29-5/09 B-1049 Brussels Tel +32-2 296 8039 Fax +32-2 296 1692 To see the full details of the call, please: click here(opens in new window)
