Austria approaches parents and teachers in quest to increase number of women in science
Austria is to launch a new programme aimed at increasing the number of girls studying science. MUT2 - Mädchen und Technik (Girls and Technology) will receive 1.3 million euro from the Austrian government. It aims to address the imbalance between the number of girls doing well at school in science subjects, and the number that choose to continue with science when it is no longer compulsory. 'Accomplished skills are obviously not being used often enough,' said Austria's Minister for Education, Science and Culture, Elisabeth Gehrer. 'Talented girls are not being encouraged enough by their families, friends and school to go in an unusual direction.' A number of workshops will take place during the spring as part of MUT2. The events will address both girls themselves (from those at kindergarten to those at secondary school), as well as those who come into contact with schoolgirls, in particular teachers and parents. The programme will be coordinated and managed by steering board representing all of the country's regions.
