The European Commission has published the fifth call for proposals under the 'information society technologies' (IST) priority of the Sixth Framework Programme (FP6). This is one of the areas covered by the 'Integrating and strengthening the European Research Area' specific programme. The strategic objectives covered in this call are: - photonic components; - micro/nano based sub-systems; - embedded systems; - advanced Grid technologies, systems and services; - software and services; - research networking testbeds; - multimodal interfaces; - ICT for networked business; - collaborative working environments; - access to and preservation of cultural and scientific resources; - eInclusion; - ICT for environmental risk management; - simulating emergent properties in complex systems. The call text provides an indicative budget for each of these objectives, as well the desired ratio of new verses traditional instruments to be applied to each. In specifying the instruments to be used in these areas, the call requests the use of Integrated Projects and Networks of Excellence, specific targeted research projects, coordination actions and specific support actions.
