The European Commission's Information Society and Media DG has published a call for tenders for a contract with the name 'IST 2005 - Requirements and options for accelerating the transition from traditional research to virtual research organisations through e-Infrastructures'. The aim of the study is to analyse the factors influencing a large-scale uptake of an e-Infrastructure approach in all disciplines with a particular focus on a more instrumental use of research infrastructure in the so-called 'soft' sciences (social sciences), and of the adverse factors acting as possible barriers for an optimal implementation of the e-Infrastructure concept in future research. The study should provide a clear picture of the European landscape regarding a set of disciplines (minimal four) in the social sciences and humanities - music, history, culture, education, digital libraries, etc. It should define the requirements and options for a large-scale development, implementation and uptake of broadband technologies and applications that would enable an accelerated transition from a traditional research practice to the development of virtual research and development organisations in a ubiquitous knowledge environment. The study should particularly analyse and focus on the challenges of e-Infrastructure for computer supported collaborative learning environments (CSCL), with demanding visual interactions like role playing, simulation and gaming and, finally, the study should recommend actions to be taken to pool resources to create a critical mass, based on an analysis of the current achievements and identifications of the necessary technological and administrative measures. For further information, please contact: European Commission Attn: Wim Jansen Rue Joseph II 54 J-54 01/26 B-1049 Brussels Tel. +32-2 295 4073 Fax +32-2 299 3127 E-mail: Wim.Jansen@cec.eu.int http://cordis.europa.eu/ist/RN(opens in new window) To see the full details of the call, please consult the following web address: http://ted.publications.eu.int/udl?REQUEST=Seek-Deliver&LANGUAGE=en&DOCID=209861-2005(opens in new window)
