The Institute for Reference Materials and Measurements (IRMM) of the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) and Belgium's Flemish Institute for Technological Research (VITO) have signed a collaboration agreement on scientific research in the fields of food and feed safety, and environmental quality assessment. The agreement is intended to lead to the collation of the scientific data needed to better understand, plan and implement food safety and quality programmes in the European Union. The agreement therefore provides for efforts to improve chemical and biological analysis of food and feed and environmental samples. The agreement should also deepen understanding of the scientific, economic and social issues relating to food safety, and improve cooperation with, and communication within, the EU network of Community and National Reference Laboratories. The two institutes already work together on issues such as organic food and the assessment of beneficial versus toxic substances in food. A formal relationship is expected to stimulate existing research cooperation, as well as the exchange of scientists, training and technology transfer. A joint steering committee will be established to provide guidance on projects and activities agreed by both parties. The IRMM is the JRC's specialised institute for the production, certification and marketing of reference materials and development of measurement methodologies. The work done at the institute ranges from food quality and safety research to in-vitro diagnostics and biometrology and nuclear safety and safeguards. VITO is an independent research organisation in the field of energy, environment and materials. The institute develops innovative products and processes, translating the latest knowledge and technologies into practical applications.
